But two young women held up a sign for his motorcade that said, Where s my government Farther up the road, a man waved a flattened cardboard box on which he had written, Pres. cut the red tape and help us. The president scaled down the enthusiastic assessment he made on his last trip to New Orleans in January, when he suggested this city would be a great place for Americans to bring their families and have their conventions. This time, Bush discussed the hard work ahead. He said Congress must come forward with money for reb kubki stanley uilding New Orleans and its broken levee system. I m getting a view of the progress that is being made, Bush said. There s still a lot of work to be done, no question about it. But with 85 days before the start of the next hurricane season, the levee system is only 45 percent repaired to pre-Katrina strength, CBS News chief White House correspondent Jim Axelrod reports. And the new system needs to surpass pre-Katrina levels if people are going to have the confidence to rebuild, Paul Kemp, a professor at Louisiana State University, told Axelrod. If it stops at pre-Katrina, then the city really doesn t come back. hellip; Re Qcun Comment of the Day: Afrofuturism Edition

After four months stanley termosar of lurking, hackers were able to steal credit card data undetected from July through October of 2013. So how did all these alerts go unheeded Well, for a system this size, 60,000 alerts over a period of months only adds up to about one percent of daily log entries, Neiman Marcus spokeswoman Ginger Reeder told Businessweek. What more, Reeder says the hackers gave their malicious software a name nearly identical to the official payment software, making it tough to distinguish suspicious activity from false positives, the report states. Perhaps even more perplexing: Neiman Marcus system could have been set to automatically block the malware as soon as it detected anomalous activity鈥攂ut that feature was turned off because it was hampering legitimate maintenance progr

For anyone who has followed the film and television business in the last few years, they know one thing is true: mega-franchises are king. Right now, every studio is looking for its own version of Marvel universe. Having a great script is only a small part of the equation too small, regrettably . What marketable element is going to allow the film or series to open in China, Russia, Germany, Latin America and other territories around the world, in a universe in which stars mean virtually nothing anymore, but the cartoon you watched when you were seven can easily get a $200 million budget This is one reason that Paramount has been so aggressive about marketing Star Trek overseas, given its lackluster performance abroad in previous incarnations Star Trek IV was called only The Voyage Home in Europe and even opened with a brief Star Trek primer to get fans up-to-warp speed. Two recent theories explain that it all about ice. https://gizmodo/a-supermass stanley cup ive-ice-age-may-have-led-to-complex-life-on-5988333 Many geologists believe that the early Earth underwent several phases called snowball Earth, where the planet was entirely covered in ice. The last snowball would have ended before the Cambrian explosion over half a billion years ago. These super-ice ages were caused in part by the relative dimness of the Sun 鈥?these days, our star is too hot for a snowball to happen. It also possible that a spike in oxygen could have cooled the planet even further. 3.5 billion years ago, cyanobacteria, or bluegreen algae, sta stanley quencher rted releasing oxygen during photosynthesis. This could have cooled the planet down enough for ice to form at the stanley thermobecher poles. The more ice formed, the more sunlight was reflected back into space, making the planet even cooler. Eventually, there was a runaway icehouse effect, turning our blue marble into a cue ball. How did anything survive in these snowball conditions One geologist, Adam Campbell, believes that life endured by clustering in small seas that remained liquid even in the deepest icehouse conditions. https://gizmodo/are-you-ready-for-snowball-earth-5573275 According to Discover: Campbell beli

It was a long wait. Way too long, in fact. However, CBS News correspondent John Blackstone reports that a grateful nation finally gave a hero his due on Tuesday, and made an injustice made right. In the naval battles of the Second World War, there were many acts of heroism. But what Carl Clark did wasn t recognized until today. Sixty-six years late he was awarded a medal for distinguished service in combat by Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.Clark is now 95 years old. He lived the first half of his life in a nation where racism was written into the rules. In 1936, when I joined the Navy, a black man could be nothing but a servant for white officers, Clark said. In May, 1945, he was on the destroyer Aaron Ward when it came under attack by Japanese Kamikaze pilots. He was on fire fighting duty with 7 others. First plane hit, wiped out all of these guys, all of the seven men. I was the only one left, Clark said.Injured and alone, he put out every fi stanley cups re, keeping the ruined ship afloat as it was hit b stanley polska y six kamikazes. I don t think it was courage. I don t know what it was, Clarks said. The captain had told me, the next day after the battle, Clark, I want to thank you for saving my ship. He told me that. But they made out the battle report, they didn t even put my name in the battle report. Clarks said the reason for that is obvious: Because I was a black man. Clark figures the Navy just couldn t admit that a ship stanley us full of white sailors was saved by a black steward. The media blitz over the fate of Elian Gonzalez has touched off a new powder keg. This time, it s a legal battle, brewing over a web video parody of the now infamous AP photo of heavily armed federal agents raiding the house in Miami to reunite Elian with his father. In an interview with CBSNews, the creators of the video say the Associated Press threatened them with legal action, calling the spoof an unauthorized defacing and display of AP pictures. The web video s creators, Chris Lathrop and Sean Bonner, first posted the parody on April 25, only three days after the actual raid by immigration agents and f stanley italia ederal marshals. Turns out this year, light - and light bulbs - are at the heart of a burning debate. I believe in liberty for light bulbs, said GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachman who, along with other conservative pundits, has been attacking what they call a government meddling over one of the most popular bulbs around, the watt-sucking incandescent. It all stems from a law signed by George W. Bush in 2007 requiring that our most popular light bulbs be at least 25 percent more energy efficient starting next year. But conservatives complain those standards render the lowly, old-fashioned orb obsolete -- restricting consumer choice. But this weekend, Congress pulled the funding to enforce that law, giving the incandescent a temporary reprieve. But the fight is far from over. Fecal transplants are an effective way to combat C. difficile infections, but they ;re typically delivered by enema or a tube down the digestive system. Not pleasant. But thankfully, scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital have now made the healing powers of poop available in pill form. Essentially, by introducing uncontaminated microbes from a donated stool sample typically from another family member , doctors have shown that a healthy intestinal microbiome can stanley cups uk be re-established. Trouble is, the delivery mechanism leaves much to be desired. Quantum computing will change our world. But currently, it just about impossible. Qubits, the b stanley taza its that power quantum computing, require crazy-cold temps to create, and they only survive about 3 minutes at room temp. Now, a research team has made room-temp qubits last for 39 minutes. That monumental. https://gizmodo/whats-wrong-with-quantum-computing-1444793497 Right now, quantum computing is limited by the fact that qubits are so difficult to produce. Unli stanley cups uk ke regular bits, which have a value of either 1 or 0, qubits sit in a state of superposition, both 1 and 0 at the same time. This highly-unstable state can be achieved at temperatures near absolute zero -459.67F , but degrades quickly at normal temps. And trying to operate a computer at more than 450 degrees below zero is, uh, rather impractical. So these findings, published in this week Science, are pretty impressive: at -452F, the researchers were able to create qubits from a novel material that survived for three hours. More importantly, they were able to bring them to room temperature for 39 minutes without destroying their quantum state. Since all the qubits were in the same quantum state, they couldn ;t be used for computing 鈥?a functional quantum computer would operate based on different states between qubits. But this is a huge s stanley cup tep toward making quantum computing a reality, and not just a shockingly cold one. Here something you might not know about the 6.4 earthquake epicentered near the Pacific Coast of Mexico on May 8: By the time it hit Mexico City, 170 miles away, people there already knew it was coming. The Inventec prototype, however, incorporates a powerful vacuum at the tank base to help that process along. Without even fully submerging the tank, it can reportedly hoover up to 12,000 liters per minute. What more, it can do so from bodies of water less than a foot deep. Once the filled tank is in position over the fire, crews can simply dump its contents as they would with a conventional system or they can untether the tank and leave it for ground crews to use as a portable fire hydrant鈥攅ither spraying water from it directly or using the pressurized canister to refill their own personal spraying packs. It can even be used as an emergency potable water supply at natural disaster sites. The Inventec system has not yet entered production but is expected to make quite the splash once it does. Remarkably, this is a photograph of what was once an actual adult human brain 鈥?but without the characteristic ridges and folds. A flight attendant and cancer survivor said she was forced to remove and show her prosthetic breast to a TSA agent during a security pat-down.Cathy Bossi of Charlotte, who has been a flight attendant for the past 32 years, told CBS Affiliate WBTV that in August she was asked to go through the new full-body scanners at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. As a 3-year breast cancer survivor Bossi said she didn t want the added radiation through her body, but reluctantly agreed. The TSA agent told me to put my ID on my back, Boss told WBTV correspondent Molly Grantham. When I got out of there, she said because my ID was on my back, I had to go to a personal screening area. When a church is divided over a matter of faith there are no easy answers, particularly when the divide is over some very fundamental principles that sometimes involve matters of life and death. Our cover story is reported by Barry Petersen: It s a battle between Catholic and Catholic, a battle between the past and the present. A battle centuries old that rages yet today. In Phoenix, it s a battle between Bishop Thomas Olmstead and the city s oldest hospital, St. Joseph s, whose staff includes a respected nun. It began in November 2009, with a pregnant 27-year-old mother of four who, in her 11th week, was admitted with severe pulmonary hypertension. It found that some states consider only certain types of sexual assault as criminal, while other states apply their laws to the actions of correction officers and not other prison employees like kitchen staff or medical workers.Other laws specifically apply to state facilities, and not lower-level county jails, from where most cases of abuse are reported, the report found. I feel amazing, Rook Nelson, an organizer and the owner of Skydive Chicago where the record was broken, said shortly after he made the jump. There was a lot of emotion and a lot of days where we should have got it. But we dug down deep and stuck at it. Following months of planning, tryouts and camps to decide who could take part in the dangerous challenge, the record breakers squeezed into six aircraft and launched themselves into the air at 18,500 feet. Flying at such a high altitude presents a risk of altitude sickness, so the skydivers and pilots used oxygen tanks aboard the planes.Four camera operators shooting video and stills jumped with the 138 participants to record their achievement for the FAI judges. Four counts carry a possible death penalty.Moussaoui also declared for the first time in public that Osama bin Laden personally instructed him to fly an airliner into the White House. The decision to commute Illinois death sentences to life in prison should be for everybody or for nobody, despite a review board s plan to hear almost 160 separate clemency cases next month, Gov. The appeals court noted President Bush s speech last September acknowledging secret CIA-run prisons overseas and last June s European Parliament report finding that El-Masri s story was substantially accurate. We know the first single-celled organisms were swarming across the planet over 3.5 billion years ago. Even before the shaking started, they had time to move to safety. They were ready鈥攖hanks to their advanced warning system. After a devastating 8.1 earthquake in 1985 which may have killed upwards of 10,000 people, Mexico government was determined to find a way to prevent this kind of loss of life again. Mexico City residents knew that this 6.4 earthquake was rippling towards their homes because, in 1992, they launched an effective system that able to tell millions of people that an earthquake is on the way. Most people know Tycho Brahe as the silver-nose-wearing, elk-owning astronomer that they ;d love to drink with. He was also an implacable grudge-holder. His bitterest fight involved three famous astronomers of the 16th century, and their battle over the best theory about how Earth was at the center of the universe. Tycho Brahe and Nicolaus Reimarus In 1588, Tycho Brahe, the swaggering aristocrat with a silver nose and a reputation for debauchery, published a geoheliocentric version of the universe, with both the Earth and Sun at the center of the solar system. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Federal investigators found no initial evidence that a UPS cargo jet suffered engine failure or was burning before it clipped trees at the end of a runway and slammed into a hillside, killing the two crew members onboard, officials said Thursday.UPS on Thursday night identified the victims as Capt. In an email, the company said the Jefferson County, Ala., medical examiner had confirmed their identities.A former Marine helicopter pilot, Beal had been with UPS since 1990. What we ve shown here is that it s a systemic problem, not just a few bad apples in the correctional system, said William Schulz, executive director of Amnesty Internation stanley cup al USA.In its report, the group examined laws in each state and the District of Columbia that deal with charges of sexual misconduct by guards and other workers. More than 1,000 cases of abuse were reported over the last three years, according to the organization. It believes hundreds more go unreported, mainly out of fear of retaliation. The new research, which was published last month in the open-access journal PLOS ONE, focused specifically on the Geo-Wiki Project. The goal of the project is to improve the quality of global land cover maps, said study lead author Linda See, a geographer with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria. There are several global land cover maps that scientists often use in their research, including GLC-2000, MODIS and GlobCover. However, these maps frequently disagree. Improving Participation With Competitions To help correct the discrepancies, the Geo-Wiki Project enlists citizen scientists to analyze those points of disagreements 鈥?using a Google Earth interface on the website 鈥?and determine the land covers that are really at those spots. Of course, getting people involved in citizen science projects isn ;t always easy, so the Geo-Wiki overlords began running themed competitions, in which people could win Amazon vouchers and co-authorship on scientific papers resulting from the competitions. https://gizmodo/we-

The only Sept. 11 suspect ever convicted was freed by a Hamburg court Wednesday pending the outcome of his retrial on charges of aiding the suicide pilots.Mounir El Motassadeq, 30, had been serving a maximum 15-year prison term in Hamburg since a court in the city convicted him in February 2003 of giving logistical help to the Hamburg al Qaeda cell that included three of the Sept. 11 pilots. He was ordered freed on condition that he stay in Hambur stanley cup g and not be issued a new passport, said Sabine Westphalen, spokeswoman for the Hamburg state court. He was released later in the day.El Motassadeq smiled broadly as he left th stanley cup e prison where he had been held since November 2001. He walked past waiting reporters without saying a word and was whisked by friends and his lawyer into a car, which took off for an unknown location. In their decision, the judges also sai vaso stanley d they viewed suspicions against el Motassadeq as less serious than before. While the original arrest warrant cited urgent suspicion that he was guilty of more than 3,000 counts of accessory to murder, that has been downgraded to adequate suspicion, Westphalen said. He also faces unchanged charges of membership in a terrorist organization, she said.El Motassadeq was found guilty of the combined charges in his first trial. An appeals court has ordered a retrial starting June 16, saying he was denied a fair trial because the U.S. government refused access to a key witness in its custody.Prosecutors allege el Motassade Bgwx The ocean s most horrifying monster is a parasite you ve never heard of

With the first U.S. con stanley cup canada viction from a Sept. 11 case in hand, federal prosecutors face a new battle over whether Zacarias Moussaoui should rec stanley becher eive the death penalty for plotting with al Qaeda against Americans.Although he pleaded guilty as expected Friday, Moussaoui told U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema, I will fight every inch against the death penalty. Just last week, he had told her he would plead for execution. That was among several surprises as the defendant voluntarily admitted his guilt on six counts of conspiring with al Qaeda leaders and the Sept. 11 hijackers to wreak havoc on Americans. Four counts carry a possible death penalty.Moussaoui also declared for the first time in public that Osama bin Laden personally instructed him to fly an airliner into the White House. The target date was not clear. The pleas didn t leave Moussaoui s story clear, nor did they trace his role in the plot, CBS News Legal Analyst Andrew Cohen says. There is still a disconnect here. Moussaoui pleaded guilty to being a 9/11 conspirator but then maintained later that he was not part of the 9/11 plot, Cohen says. Those two things don t match and I m not sure, since we won t now have a trial on the merits, that we ll ever know exactly for sure what Moussaoui s role was to be before, during and after 9/11. The defendant, who had stanley italia been so volatile and vituperative in three years of legal wrangling, was polite, calm and even able to joke during the proceedings. When the judge noted h Ndpt Why E-Cigarettes Might Not Be as Safe as You Think

The new calorie count regulations handed down by the FDA today promise posted calorie counts within the year at chain restaurants and within two years at vending machines. So why do we need them so badly Well, the first reason is that we ;re eating out more 鈥?the FDA estimates that Americans eat an average of 1/3 of their total calories out up from just under 1/5 in the ;70s . But there also a termo stanley nother reason: Because, as study after study has shown, Americans are completely, often almost hilariously, incompetent at estimating how many calories are in their orders. Need proof Remember those numbers you came up with for that order of cheese fries with ranch or a plain burger and fries Here are the actual numbers, via the Washington Post Wonkblog, for both the real calorie counts and the average estimated ones for a variety of common orders from a study in the American Journal of Public Heal stanley nz th: The burger and fries comes in at around 1,250, but the cheese fries are over 3,000 鈥?more than the average total recommend daily calories of 2,000.
