The Republican National Committee has filed lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act s ban on national parties raising and spending non-federal dollars, and the constitutionality of political party coordinated expenditure limits. The Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act is better known as the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill, and the lawsuit is effectively an effort to overturn it. The effort, the Washington Times argues, amounts to a slap in the face to 2008 GOP presidential nominee John McCain, whose advocacy for the bill angered many conservatives. This story was written by Lee Feder, Daily IlliniI have wrote many columns toexplain why the United States needs to rewrite its energy policy. Despite the statement on our currency that we are E pluribus unum, Americans are in the midst of committing a tragically heroic decision. While high gas prices are blunting our current economic strength, they are merely a harbinger of, and a guiding beacon for, the future. In order to avoid the fate that nearly every other historical power has met, we must eliminate nearly all oil consumption and shift emphasis from a fossil fuel-based economy to a renewable-based one. MARGARET BRENNAN: There are a lot of stressors on the global economic system right now, how do you describe where we are MALPASS: It s a sharp slowdown, including even China. So we ve seen the world growth fall by half since January in terms of GDP growth. But there s also shortages, there s inflation. The U.S. is urging Poland and other Eastern European countries to give their Russian-made fighter jets to Ukraine and is working on a plan to backfill the planes they give up with U.S.F-16s.One advantage of the Russian planes is that Ukrainian pilots are already trained to fly them. The other reason is that these planes can be deployed far more quickly. One U.S. official said the administration has told Poland it should make Russian-made MiGs in its arsenal available because these planes would not require U.S. permission to be transferred. Conversely, any effort to send newly manufactured planes to Ukraine could be hampered by several years worth of paperwork with defense contractors. CBS/ AP The White House put out a statement under Mr. Obama s imprimatur late Thursday, expressing satisfaction with the Senate s confirmation of 27 presidential appointments. But the president, who earlier had threatened to use his power to make recess appointments if the Republicans kept the nominations bottled up, didn t pass on the opportunity to, well, rub it in a little. The text reads: At stanley cup the beginning of the week, a staggering 63 nominees had been stalled in the Senate because one or more senators placed a hold on their nomination. In most cases, these holds have had nothing to do with the nominee s qualifications or even political views, and these nominees have already received broad, bipartisan support in the committee process. Instead, many holds were motivated by a desire to leverage projects for a Senator s state or simply to frustrate progress. It is precisely these kinds of tactics that enrage the American people. And so on Tuesday, I told Senator McConnell that if Republican senators did not release these holds, I would exercise my authority to fill critically-needed positions in the federal government temporarily through the use of recess appointments. This is a rare b stanley cup website ut not unprecedented step that many other presidents have taken. Al Gore upped the ante Wednesday in his self-described bid to be a law enforcement president by proposing to hire 10,000 new prosecutors stanley cup in communities nationwide. The vice president s campaign proposal stanley cup is modeled after President Clinton s COPS program to put 100,000 new community police officers on the streets, which Gore has already proposed expanding by 50,000. In prepared remarks for his speech to Kansas City-area law enforcement personnel, Gore said he was focusing on the front lines. We need more police. We need more crime-fighting prosecutors. And then we have to give them all the tools and resources they need to make even the toughest crime hot spots safe and secure. According to a 1996 Bureau of Justice Statistics survey, one quarter of prosecutor offices in the country did not employ a full-time prosecutor. Gore also proposed a fund to target hot spots, communities where, contrary to the national trend, crimes rates have gone up. Such a fund, his campaign said, would provide resources to hire more police, pay cops overtime in troubled crime areas, equip neighborhoods with the l stanley spain atest crime prevention technologies, and help local law enforcement work in cooperation with federal authorities. But a member of Truss Cabinet said the government and palace were in agreement about the decision. That is a decision that has been made amicably, as far as I am aware, between the palace and the government, Simon Clarke told Times Radio. The suggestions this morning that he was ordered to stay away are simply not true. Clarke also rejected suggestions that Truss didn t want Charles to attend the summit because she intends to water down Britain s climate goals. The government remains committed to the achieving its target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, he said. The Palace echoed Clarke s comments in a statement to theBBC. Mayor Sheila Dixon was indicted Friday on charges that she stanley tazas accepted illegal gifts during her time as mayor and City Council president, including travel, fur coats and gift cards that she allegedly used for a holiday shopping spree.A grand jury indicted Dixon on 12 counts, including four counts of perjury and two counts of theft over $500. She was also charged with theft under $500, fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary and misconduct in office. The State Prosecutor s Office, which has been investigating corruption at City Hall for nearly three years, said Dixon received holiday gift cards for four years from several people. There are reports of a plane from Texas landing in Chicago carrying more migrants that arrived around 1am. President Barack Obama still has the approval of a majority of Americans, but it s an increasingly pessimistic nation. The public grew slightly more dispirited on a range of matters over the past month, including w stanley mug ar and the economy, continuing the slippage that has occurred since Obama took office, the latest Associated Press-GfK poll shows. This comes at a time when he is trying to revive the struggling economy, considering sending more troops to the 8-year-old Afghanistan war, muscling a health care reform overhaul through Congress and hoping to push through other ambitious measures like legislation focused on climate change. People were gloomier about the direction of the country than in October. They disapproved of Obama s handling of the economy a bit more than before. And, perhaps most striking for the commander in chief, more people have lost confidence in Obama on Iraq and Afghanistan over the last month. Overall, there s a malaise about the state of the nation. It s in pretty bad shape, said truck driver Floyd Hacker, a Democrat who voted for Obama. He sounded like somebody who could make things happen. I still think he can. Party identification tends to change slowly, and he measures it using tenths of a percentage. My recollection is that party identification remained fairly steady in the 1995-2005 period; Rasmussen s numbers suggest it has changed more since mid-2005. Let s look at it quarter by quarter, rounding off to full percentages:The Democrats edge in the 2004 election quarter was 39 percent to 37 percent, not much different from the 37 percent to 37 percent party identification in the 2004 exit poll. It s one indication, and there were others, that Republican turnout efforts were more successful than Democratic turnout efforts. Party ID for both parties seems to have declined slightly after the election quarter, as the intensity of partisan feeling died down. Republicans continue to trail Democrats by about the same 1 percent to 3 percent up through March 2006.Then in the third quarter, with the increased intensity of the fighting in Iraq, the Democratic edge grows. Republican stanley cup Party identification sinks from 34 percent to about 31 or 32 percent, while Democra stanley termosy tic Party identification rises to about 37 or 38 percent. Here a fun experiment: stop what you ;re doing and use your hands to count to ten. Done Good. Now remember how you did it, because we ;re about to analyze your technique; as it turns out, how you count with your hands may say a lot more about you than you think. So, how do you count Many cultures use some variation of what psychologists call the closed fist method, wherein one starts with a closed fist, and begins counting by unfurling the fingers of his or her hand. But the stanley cup similarities end there. The degree of cultural diversity in finger counting 8230; has been grossly underestimated, write psychologists Andrea Bender and Sieghard Beller in the latest issue of Cognition. People from the Middle East, however, often begin counting with the little finger of their right hand. If you hail from China, or North America, you ;re more likely to begin counting on an index finger. The Japanese are the odd ones out; they tend to start from an open-hand position, and count by closing their fingers into a fist, beginning with the little finger. Great, you might be thinking. When the MP3 revolution hit its stride, the coolest thing about it was how much control we were given stanley cup deutschland over our music. Weightless files and tiny players let you carry your entire library around with you, all the time. Anything you wanted to listen to so long as you had already hunted it down was available instantaneously stanley canada with a swipe of the finger. No longer would we be limited by what we could physically carry, or what a radio network chose to play. It quickly became clear that while this level of control was great some of the time, there was still something nice about having someone or something else pick your music. Basically, we needed a way to recapture that heady feeling of being surprised by an old favorite, or enjoying an artist we ;d never heard of before. The shuffle feature recaptured some of those feelings: Dump an iPod or a playlist into a pot, draw songs at random, and hope for the best. Caroline John, who died earlier this month, was one of the most crucial factors in the survival of Doctor Who, our favorite time-travel TV show. She only appeared in four stories in 1970, but she was instrumental in transforming the show into something that could endure. In 1969, Doctor Who was on the brink of cancellation, perceived as an outdated adventure show for kids 鈥?but instead of cancelling it, the BBC gave it a brand new format. The mercurial Doctor was dragged down to Earth, the stories were more grown up and darker, and the Doctor was paired with a trigger-happy military organization, U.N.I.T. Before this discovery, scientists suspected what could have been the shorelines of such ocean. However, this is the first time that this Mars ; ocean has been shown in all its magnitude. According to ESA, Mars Express has detected sediments reminiscent of an ocean floor within the boundaries of previously identified, ancient shorelines on Mars. Public Advocate Mark Green Tuesday morning called for a judicial inquiry into Mayor Rudolph Giuliani s release of the sealed juvenile records of Patrick Dorismond, the unarmed man killed during a confrontation with pol stanley borraccia ice.In papers prepared for filing in state Supreme Court, Green asked the court to investigate how Giuliani and Police Commissioner Howard Safir obtained the sealed records and whether the disclosure violated the law.Giuliani contends that releasing the information was legal because Dorismond s death ended his right to privacy. But Green, the city s No. 2 official and a Democrat, cites legal precedents in which judges have refused to release sealed Family Court records of deceased individuals. Giuliani is a Republican. The records that the mayor released showed that Dorismond was arrested at age 13 for robbery and assault. While the majority are aware of the ne stanley travel mug cessity of eliminating foreign oil imports as well as the harmful effects of CO2, the general knowledge does not fully encompass the short- and long-term global strategy behind adjusting our energy needs. The U.S. is urging Poland and other Eastern European countries to give their Russian-made fighter jets to Ukraine and is working on a plan to backfill the planes they give up with U.S.F-16s.One advantage of the Russian planes is that Ukrainian pilots are already trained to fly them. CBS/AP The Senat stanley termosy e passed a resolution Friday that denounces the ongoing violence and other crackdowns against anti-government protestors in Iran, the Associated Press reports. The Senate s resolution follows a similar measure i stanley tazas n the House. Both houses condemned the use of violence against protesters and the obstruction of telephones and other communication methods in Iran following the disputed elections. The Iranian government has previously shut down cell phone communication during the elections. It has recently moved to block Internet communications, including social networking sites such as Twitter. This is the strongest measure Congress has taken in addressing the situation in Iran. Some view the resolution as a criticism of President Obama, who has been somewhat cautious in discussing the Iranian government s behavior post-elections, citing fears of being seen as meddling. stanley isolierkanne Mr. Obama today spoke to CBS News Harry Smith about comments by Iran s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in which Khamenei backed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The project, Functional Imaging to Develop Outstanding Service-Dogs or FIDOS for short, was uncovered in a new research solicitation from DARPA. The plan goes a little something like this: coax a pup with potential into an MRI machine, have a trainer give it cues, and then read its brain activity. Theoretically, the ones with the most activity will be the smartest/easiest to train. The plan is based on other, similar research involving dogs and MRI machines and might not only be used to find smart dogs, but also hyper-social ones, that would be great for working with soldiers with PTS stanley website D in rehab. When the MP3 revolution hit its stride, the coolest thing about it was how much control we were given stanley cup deutschland over our music. Believe it or not, Frogger has been skippin stanley cup g his way across busy highways for thirty years now. And to celebrate his anniversary, Tyler DeAngelo created this updated version of the arcade classic that now has the frog dodging the realtime traffic on New York Fifth Avenue. But don ;t worry, this version of the game doesn ;t have players dragging the arcade cabinet across the actual street, ala George Constanza. That would be game over in two minutes. Instead, stanley cups the realtime footage from a webcam looking down at the street is processed, and the position and motion of the actual cars driving down Fifth Avenue is translated to the in-game vehicles. The hacked version of the game also provides a split-screen view showing the player how the traffic in the game matches the traffic on Fifth Avenue stanley cup in real life. But since it was built into an authentic Frogger cabinet, you can also switch back and play the classic version of the game. A nice addition for when you get the hankering to play in the wee hours of the morning, but the light traffic doesn ;t provide much of a challenge. Just when it seemed like we knew all the dangers of climate change, science has to go and throw us this curveball. Warmer temperatures make lizards ; brains stanley mugs develop di stanley us fferently. Last thing we need is some newly super-intelligent lizards judging us. That the finding of researchers at the University of Sydney in Australia, who tested how rising temperatures affected the intelligence of the tiny lizard species known as the three-lined skinks. Over the last couple of decades, the average temperature of a skink nest has risen three degrees Fahrenheit, despite the females ; attempts to dig deeper nests that will shield their young from the warmer temperatures. Those nest temperatures are likely to only get hotter as global temperatures continue to increase. And while climate change often works to upset the fragile conditions that species need for reproductive success, hotter temperatures could be a positive boon for skinks, as eggs develop differently in response to warmer temperatures. First, eggs grown in hotter conditions tend to create a more equal gender balance 鈥?in cooler temperatures, more males are born because they are more likely to survive cold winters than females. But more importantly, the hotter skinks appear to be much smarter than their cooler counterparts, as Sydney researcher Joshua Amiel discovered with two sets of eggs he stanley mug had incubated, one at 60 degrees and the other at 72.
