The ruddy color of Jupiter s Great Red Spot is likely a product of simple chemicals being broken apart by sunlight in the planet s upper atmosphere, according to a new analysis of data from NASA s Cassini mission. The results contradict the other leading theory for the origin of the spot s striking color -- that the reddish chemicals come from beneath Jupiter s clouds. The results are being presented this week by Kevin Baines, a Cassini team scientist based at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, at the American Astronomical Society s Division for Planetary Science Meeting in Tucson, Arizona.Baines and JPL colleagues Bob Carlson and Tom Momary arrived at their conclusions using a combination of data from Cassini s December 2000 Jupiter flyby and stanley mug labor vaso stanley atory experiments. In the lab, the researchers blasted ammonia and acetylene gases -- chemicals known to exist on Jupiter -- with ultraviolet light, to simulate the sun s effects on these materials at the extreme heights of clouds in the Great Red Spot. This produced a reddish material, which the team compared to the Great Red Spot as observed by Cassini s Visible and Infrared Mappin cups stanley g Spectrometer VIMS . They found that the light-scattering properties of their red concoction nicely matched a model of the Great Red Spot in which the red-colored material is confined to the uppermost reaches of the giant cyclone-like feature. Do you remember net neutrality It may seem like ancient history now, but there was stanley cup a time when regulators actually came together to put in place guardrails preventing greedy telecoms from segregating internet access to the highest bidders. Then Trump and Ajit Pai happened. Now, nearly five years after the Federal Com stanley termos munications Commission voted to gut net neutrality protections, a handful of Democratic lawmakers are working to codify the protections into law. This week Democratic Senators Ed Markey and Ron Wyden introduced the Net Neutrality and Broadband Justice Act, which would officially classify broadband as an essential service. With that categorization in place, the lawmakers say the FCC would then be empowered to enforce net neutrality rules banning throttling and other discriminatory deeds deployed by internet providers. Additionally, according to Markey, the bill would grant the FCC the ability to enact broadband policies, that increase accessibility, close the digital divide. What is net neutrality For those still confused over the lingo, net neutrality refers to rules and regulations intended to encourage equal access to the internet. Under these rules, internet service providers would be prohibited from creating internet fast lanes or granting certain companies or individuals preferential treatment. Net neutrality supporters argue those protections would essentially outlaw the blocking or throttling of internet traffic stanley cups uk by mobile or broadband providers. NASA s Kepler space telescope has witnessed the effects of a dead star bending the light of its companion star. The findings are among the first detections of this phenomenon -- a result of Einstein s general theory of re stanley travel mug lativity -- in binary, or double, star systems. The dead star, called a white dwarf, is the burnt-out core of what used to be a star like our sun. It is locked in an orbiting dance with its partner, a small stanley termosy red dwarf star. While the tiny white dwarf is physically smaller than the red dwarf, it is more massive. This white dwarf is about the size of Earth but has the mass of the sun, said Phil Muirhead of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, lead author of the findings to be published April 20 in the Astrophysical Journal. It s so hefty that the red dwarf, though larger in physical size, is circling around the white dwarf. Kepler stanley quencher s primary job is to scan stars in search of orbiting planets. As the planets pass by, they block the starlight by miniscule amounts, which Kepler s sensitive detectors can see. The technique is equivalent to spotting a flea on a light bulb 3,000 miles away, roughly the distance from Los Angeles to New York City, said Avi Shporer, co-author of the study, also of Caltech.Muirhead and his colleagues regularly use public Kepler data to search for and confirm planets around smaller stars, the red dwarfs, also known as M dwarfs. Rodriguez鈥擥etty ImagesBy Victor Luc mizuno kersonSeptember 3, 2015 2:30 PM EDTA pair of resourceful Star Wars fanatics have put forth a convincing theory on the inner workings of BB-8, the adorable droid set to make its film debut in The Force Awakens this holiday season. The new droid, which will also be available as a $150 toy for franchise fans, has a head that can remain mostly stationary even as its spherical body is rolling madly to move it from place to place. The effect almost makes it look as if BB-8 head can defy gravity. Not so, say the pair of Spanish designers who started a website explaining how the machine works. The fans dug up a patent filed by Disneyrsquo Imagineering group back in 2010 which appears to explain how the BB-8 functions. The patent describes a robot that uses omni wheels to allow its spherical body to roll in any direction, with each wheel being connected to a motor. Gyroscopes and acceleromoeters are used to determine the machinersquo postioning. A ba reebok se plate serves as a counterweight, helping the robot maintain a low center of gravity. A mast running vertically through the sphere is the key to BB-8rsquo floating head appearance. The fan mockup of BB-8rsquo internals show the most connecting to the head via a rotation motor that lets the head spin independently of the robotrsquo spherical body. A flexible joint lower

20 minute readJuly 3, 2024 7:00 AM EDTThis story was reported with support from the Pulitzer Center Ocean Reporting Network.Whenever the growing pile of plastic waste in front of her door takes up too much space, Asinate Lewabeka has a simple solution. She sets it on fire. She prefers to do so at dawn when the air is still so that the smoke rises in a black column. She says any later in the day, the coastal breeze risks blowing the acrid fumes straight into her home, a modest shack built on the edge of the Vunato dump site in Lautoka, Fijis second largest city.Lewabeka watches in satisfaction as flames consume the haphazard pile of empty water bottles, travel-size tubes of shampoo, juice cartons, wads of food packaging, a broken plastic fan, and coils of cop stanley cup per wire coated in PVC insulation, reducing it all to carbonized lumps. It may no longer be an eyesore, but Lewabekas problem is far from gone. Yet open burning is one of the most common methods for eliminating unwanted waste in a remote island nation besieged by a plastic tide. Less than a third of Fijis plastic waste is locally produced.
