PORTLAND, Ore. -- Oregon is about to embark on a first-in-the-nation program that aims to charge car owners not for the fuel they use, but for the miles they drive. The program is meant to help the state raise more revenue to pay for road and bridge projects at a time when money generated from gasoline taxes are declining across the country, in part, because of greater fuel efficiency and the increasing popularity of fuel-efficient, hybrid and electric cars.Starting July 1, up to 5,000 volunteers in Oregon can sign up to drive with devices that collect data on how much they have driven and where. The volunteers will agree to pay 1.5 cents f adidas originals or each mile traveled on public roads within Oregon, instead of the tax now added when filling up at the pump. Some electric and hybrid car owners, however, say the new tax would be unfair to them and would discourage purchasing of green vehicles. This program targets hybrid and electric vehicles, so it s discriminatory, said Patrick Connor, a Beaverton resident who has been driving an electric car since 2007. As CBS M jordan oneywatch reported, some analysts agree. If you cut back completely, you could save up to $300 a year. Another way to save: cut back on the apps on your phone that cost you money. Mitt Romney With his prospects improving in Iowa, GOP front-runner Mitt Romney is signaling renewed interest in the first-caucus state, which stanley cup website would mark a change from his campaign s New Hampshire-only strategy.Romney plans to visit western Iowa next week, his first swing through the state since August. Until recently, the former Massachusetts governor expressed little interest in competing in Iowa, which traditionally holds the first caucus of the primary season. The event is dominated by social and religious conservatives wary of some of Romney s moderate positions as governor and of his Mormon religion. As a candidate for president four years ago, Romney spent significant resources in Iowa only to lose to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. This time, his strategy for the early primary states has been to focus intensely on New Hampshire s more moderate and independent primary voters. House Republicans on Thursday elected Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California to replace Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia as House majority leader, following Cantor s stunn stanley cup ing primary defeat last week to a conservative challenger. McCarthy emerged as the favorite to replace Cantor shortly after Cantor announced he would step down as majority leader in July, months before his term expires. As majority leader, McCarthy is now the second-ranking Republican in the House, behind Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. The majority leader is responsible for operational decisions such as when the House will be in session and what bills make it to the House floor. The majority leader must also often negotiate with Democrats, leaving the Republican in that role vulnerable to criticism from the right, as Cantor learned the hard way. It can be a real challenge for diagnostic tests, Mary Rodgers, a co-author of the report and a principal scientist at Abbott, said. Her company tests more than 60% of the world s blood supply, she said, and they have to look for new strains and track those in circulation so we can accurately detect it, no matter where it happens to be in the world. In this installment of our series Issues That stanley cups uk Matter, former Republican presidential candidate and Ohio Gov. John Kasich discusses the presidential nomineesrsquo; economic policies, including expanding the American economy and handling trade agreements with other countries.According to former Republican presidential candidate and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, one high priority for the next president is to approve the Trans Pacific Partnership TPP ndash; a deal both presidential candidates oppose. We have a lot of little countries out there that are saying, lsquo; We want to work with the United States.rsquo; And to tell them lsquo;norsquo; really is a big mistake, not only from an economic point of view but also from the standpoint of geopolitics and our ability to be strong in the Pacific, Kasich said. If the U.S. stays out of this massive trade deal with 11 Pacific Rim countries, Kasich said, Russia and China ndash; which are not included ndash; would be able to expand their influence in the region and emerge as the only winners.Despite not agreeing with President Obama on a lot of things, Kasich has pushed for Congress to ratify the deal, which Obama has prioritized for his remaining time in office. The crimes date back to 1975, and none were more recent than 2001. All of the jail terms and periods of probation have been served. The new acts of presidential clemency bring to 17 the total number of pardons Mr. Obama has granted. At this same point in his presidency, George W. Bush had granted only 12 pardons. But both numbers are far fewer than the number of granted by their other recent predecessors. Today s announcement of pardons came by way of a White House press stanley cup release. Usually they re announced by the Department of Justice where the U.S. Pardon Attorney is based. To date, Mr. Obama has received 672 petitions for pardons and over 4,000 for commutations of sentence. And while 17 pardons have been granted, 131 pardon petitions have been denied as have over 1150 requests for commutations of sentence. Another 294 pardon petitions were closed without presidential action and 775 bids for commutation. The White House issued today s list of pardon recipients without further co

We go now to former FDA commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb. He joins us from Stamford, Connecticut, this morning. Good morning to you--DR. SCOTT GOTTLIEB: Good morning. MARGARET BRENNAN: I know you ve been dealing with power outages in Connecticut as well. So I thank you for- for coming on today. I want to ask you this overall number. Two and a half weeks ago, you predicted that by the end of the year we could be at 300,000 deaths. Is that still where you think we are headed DR. GOTTLIEB: Well, we re definitely going to be somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000, and whether we re closer to 200,000 or closer to 300,000 depends on what we do and how this evolves. We re probably going to have another wave. And the concern now is that this has become so pervasive across the country that it could start to infect more rural communities that have largely been untouched to date and probably are a little bit more complacent because they have been untouched, but ar Aynq Supreme Court allows Trump to use military funds for border wall construction
PHILADELPHIAmdash; Pennsylvania hasnrsquo;t voted Republican for president since 1988. Democrats have increased their registration numbers here by more than a half-million over the past year, and Barack Obama has a double-digit lead in the polls.YetJohn McCain s campaign continues to signal that it intends to contest the state and its 21 electoral votes to the end. It is a high-risk, high-return en stanley fr deavor: Pennsylvania represents a costly gambit, one that siphons resources from must-win states such as Ohio and Florida, but a win here would enable McCain to lose a few other states that George W. Bush carried and still capture the White House. So with 23 days until Election Day, the state finds itself at the epicenter of the presidential campaign, with both sides spending precious time and money trying to energize their respective bases and drive up their opponentsrsquo; negatives. For Obama, that means trying to stanley cup offset white, working-class votersrsquo; uneasiness with him by caneca stanley hammering McCain as out of touch on their economic struggles, and driving a huge turnout here in the statersquo most populous city, where he spent Saturday barnstorming four neighborhoods. For McCain, it means courting the politically competitive but historically Republican suburbs ringing Philadelphia, as well as the industrial and rural parts of the state that carried Hillary Clinton to a 9-point victory over Obama in theDemocratic primary in April.
