Nearly a century ago, an article stanley france appeared in Scientific American making the bold 鈥?and, dare I say, visionary 鈥?prediction that our left eye would become a vestigial organ, endowing us with a single, remaining eye that would possess astonishing powers of perception. Thomas Hall Shastid, a prominent ophthalmologist and the author of several scientific papers, proposed the theory in stanley cups uk 1927. His argument was based upon a premise that the brain speech center had profoundly effected the development of human vision. He reasoned that, since most people tended to be right-handed a trait controlled by the left side of the brain , early humans likely relied on their right hand for communication 鈥?gestures, accompanied by grunts 鈥?that preceded the development of spoken language. Therefore, he argued, the speech center emerged on the left side of the brain, providing the cognitive abilities that made communication with the right hand possible. As such, Shastid concluded, the right eye which sends visual information to the left side of the brain became the dominant eye, since detailed vision of the right hand was necessary to enable effecti stanley cup ve communication. And thus, the left eye became less necessary and began to degenerate. Shastid expanded upon this convoluted theory to predict our evolutionary destiny: I believe that, in the course of countless ages, the two human eyes will come closer and closer together, the bridge of the nose will further diminish and si

One area for potential improvement, he said, is finding jobs and homes for the estimated 56,000 veterans who leave prisons each year.About one-third of all adult homeless men and nearly one-fifth of all homeless adults served in the military. About 3 percent of the overall homeless population served in Iraq or Afghanistan. About 3,700 from the recent wars have been seen in VA homeless outreach programs and more than 550 have been treated in a VA-connected residential program. It is estimated that 130,000 veterans are homeless on a typical night in the U.S. Shinseki said that is down from 195,000 six years ago. CBS News Government regulators are calling out Avon and other cosmetics companies, accusing them of making product claims that go too far. The Food and Drug Administration has sent warning letters to at least four companies, including cosmetic giants Avon and Lancome, threatening to block sales or even seize their products if they don t tone down their ads. Nothing worse than a dead battery鈥攅xcept maybe if you run out of juice while on patrol in the backwoods of Afghanistan. But until now, US forces have had to lug around a huge and heavy charger. Not anymore. Army research has just shrunk a mobile charging station small enough for any soldier to carry on assignment. There is an increasing need with the networked Soldier for portable power, said Dave Schimmel, a PM SWAR lead engineer. There is a widening gap between the need for power and the actual availability of that power when the Soldier is in the Tier-1 stanley cup nz environment [the most austere environment, such as the remote areas of Afghanistan] so portable power is an absolute requirement. The old charger was state-of-the art when the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command communications-electronics center CERDEC created it in the 1990s, but was roughly the size of a carry-on bag and weighed so much it had to be mounted on a truck. By CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.CBS News has learned that the Federal Aviation Administration is seeking new regulations to increase the mandatory retirement age for commercial airline pilots from 60 to 65. FAA administrator Marion Blak botella stanley ey is expected to make a formal announcement on Tuesday in a speech at the National Press Club in Washington.Sources say the new FAA rules will closely mirror new international regulations which allow a pilot to continue flying up to age 65 as long as his/her co-pilot in the cockpit is younger than 60. The International Civil Aviation Organization increased its pilot retirement age from 60 to 65 last November. Since then, most airline pilots, except those flying for airlines in Colombia, France, Pakistan and the United States, have been permitted to keep their jobs past 60. The U.S. Age 60 retirement rule has been on the books since 1960 and has always been somewhat controversial. Senior captains have embraced early retirement because stanley cup generous pension benefits have usually guaranteed a good retirement. The government has taken undisclosed steps to protect commercial flights from a missile attack and a task force has been assembled to come up with more ideas, officials said Wednesday.Security officials have long been concerned that a terrorist using a portable missile launcher could bring down a jetliner filled with hundreds of passengers. Al Qaeda has already tried this twice since Sept. 11 ndash; first outside Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia; next, they fired two missiles at an Israeli passenger jet near Mombassa, Kenya. All three missiles missed, but the problem is that all three came from a larger batch of Soviet-made missiles sold on the black market in Yemen, and no one knows where the rest are, reports CBS News Correspondent Jim Stewart. Commander Chris Hadfield 8216 cover version of Space Oddity took the internet by storm yesterday, but it got a lot of people thinking: does it amount to the most expensive music video ever made http://gizmodo/preview/was-commander-hadfield-s-performance-of-space-odd... rev=1368523119 Fortunately, Randall Munroe of XKCD fame has set his mind to the task of answering that question on his What If site. Firstly, it worth noting there no easy way to calculate an answer鈥攂ut he given it a good go. First, consider the location of the shoot: The ISS is expensive, but there have been music videos set against an even more expensive backdrop. At a cost of roughly $400 billion, the US Eisenhower Interstate Highway System is probably the most exp stanley cups uk ensive peacetime public works project in the history of mankind. If were including the entire ISS in the cost of Commander Hadfields video, any video shot on the American highway system should get the cost of the highway syst stanley cup em added to its total. By that measure, the commanders video would lose to U2s Last Night on Earth, which was filmed on a section of I-67 stanley mug 0 in Missouri, and therefore cost more than the ISS and the Moon landing program combined. A bargain, then! But both the road and the ISS are used for things other than making videos鈥攕o what about cost compared to how much time the shoot took If you spread out the ISSs price tag across all the astronaut-hours spent on board, you come up with about $7.

Sepsis is an nasty and surprisingly common way to die. The illness is triggered by blood infections but, ultimately, it your own immune reaction鈥攏ot the bacteria or virus鈥攖hat poisons you to death. F stanley bottles iltering those pathogens out of blood right away, though, could be a promising treatment. Enter a new device made of magnetic nanobeads coated in sticky proteins that attract bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Scientists at Harvard Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering have created what is essentially an artificial spleen. The device made of wire and plastic may not resemble the fleshy organ in our bodies, but its series of bloo stanley travel mug d channels mimics the microarchitecture of spleens. Blood passing through these channels encounters magnetic nanobeads coated with a protein called mannose-bindin stanley cup g lectin MBL . MBL is a natural immune protein that binds to the surfaces of bacteria, viruses, fungi, pathogen, and toxins; this super general binding is deliberate because sepsis can be caused by any number of microbes. The nanobeads can then be easily filtered from the blood, pathogens and all. So far, the biospleen has been tested on rats with blood infections. The next trials are on pigs and eventually, if all goes well in a couple years, in humans. For the leading cause of death in hospitals, a new treatment for sepsis could not come soon enough.

A team of experts from Ohios Great Lakes Brewing Company, along with archaeologists from the University of Chicago, have replicated 5,500-year-old beer from Mesopotamia using clay vessels, a wooden spoon, and an ancient recipe. Really, Salem Last week, the show about the Salem witch trials seemed off to a fun start as its witches plotted their revenge against the town Puritan leaders. But the second episode pushed some of the show more troubling aspects to the forefront. After last week recap of the pilot, there was a lot of discussion in the comments about whether it a stanley thermos mug ppropriate to re-tell the real, historical, tragic story of the Salem witch trials with fictional, fantastical witches. I wasn ;t ready to call the show problematic because, at least in the case of Mary Sibley, stanley mug the pilot did a nice job of showing how Puritan culture might drive a powerless young woman to turn to witchcraft. I ;m ready to call the show problematic now. Here is how the conflict stands right now: The witches of Salem want to live in the New World without getting themselves burned at the stake like their predecessors in Europe. That means ridding themselves of Salem Puritan leadership鈥攈ence Mary Sibley plot to stir up chaos in Salem with a fake witch hunt, one in which the only people executed are non-witches. Now, there may be nuanced ways to handle this, to ask what someone lik stanley cup becher e Xander Berkeley character Magistrate Hale might do as a real witch of ambiguous morality trying to make it in the New World.

We already knew that this ancient galaxy cluster nicknamed El Gordo was the largest of the distant galaxies that we had s stanley spain potted, but it turns out we ;ve been massively underestimating its size. How did astronomers figure it out Simple. They weighed it. Super-fat galaxy cluster confirms existence of dark matter and dark energy So how does one weigh a cluster of galaxies almost 10 billion light years away and 3 million billion times more massive than our sun Very carefully, it turns out. We ;ve previously coveredgravitational lensing, a phenomenon that occurs around clusters of galaxies where the combined gravity is so strong that it warps space and light in a way that actually magnifies our view of space far beyond what we ;d be able to see otherwise. https://gizmodo/this-is-the-deepest-into-space-anyone-has-ever-seen-1497... Weak lensing works on a similar principle 鈥?except instead of forming a zoom lens, the reflection it returns is closer to that of a funhouse mirror. By measuring just how much the cluster gravity had distorted the pictures of space around it, James Jee from the University of California Davis was able to calculate that we ;d vastly underestimated the cluster mass by about 43%. Maybe the language lovers who looked up refudiate this summer wanted to refute or repudiate its existence as a real word.Whatever the reason, their curiosity made Sarah Palin s not-quite-a-word Merriam-Webster s Word of the Summer, the one most often searched by users of the stanley quencher publisher s online dictionary. They didn t find it, of course. The pseudo-word refudiate isn t in the dictionary and is not expected to be added anytime soon. That didn t deter Palin when the former Alaska governor used it on a news show and in a Twitter message in July in place of refute or repudiate, which have similar meanings. Refute means to prove something wrong or deny its truth or accuracy. Antarctica melting ice sheets have been a major contributor to global sea level increases over the last decade, and the losses are expected to accelerate over the next two centuries. To obtain a more accurate and timely understanding of the situation, researchers from the UBL have installed a series of GPS sensors and phase-sensitive radar along the Roi Baudouin ice shelf in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. These devices will monitor the sheet shifts in real-time, providing climatologists with daily, not weekly, updates.
